MR. R.G. SIMMERS GOING
TO STUDY METEOBOLOGY
j One of New Zealand's representatives I with Sir Douglas Mawson's forthcoming Antarctic expedition will be Mr. E. G. I Simmers, of the Meteorological Office. Mr. Simmers has been instructed to hold himself in readiness to proceed almost at once to England in order that he may join the Discovery before she sails nest August. Mr. Simmers will be on the Meteorological staff of the expedition. Mr. Simmers, who is 24 this month, was born and educated in Timaru, being dux of the High School, of "which his
father was for some time headmaster.' He has had a distinguished scholastic career,, gaining several scholarships, and being one of the Canterbury College nominees for the Ehodes^ Scholarship. Physics and electricity have been his chief subjects, and he has ■■ always displayed a great interest in meteorology. He joined the Meteorological Office at the beginning of this year. The Discovery leaves England in Augusts and proceeds to the Antarctic via Capetown and Australia. The object of.the expedition is to acquire additional meteorological data and to investigate the possibility of establishing meteorological stations in the Antarctic. These would, it is claimed, be . of immense assistance in Australia and New Zealand. The expedition is planned to finish its work within a year from the date of sailing.
