WESTERLY WEATHER

CHANGEABLE AND UNSETTLED

Yesterday's meteorological reports indicated that the cyclone which had been situated over the northern part of the Tasman Sea had moved away northward and was 'dying out in so doing. 3ut between the South Island to beyond Tasmania extends an intense depression, and this points to a continuance of the westerly type of weather, a type from which the Dominion has been singularly free for some considerable time. Mild, dull, and unsettled weather has been general. Most parts of the South Island have had rain falls _ being heavy in the high country and in the western parts of Otago' Arthur's Pass heads the list with 373 points of rain, 'Oknru : recording 315 points, JPuysegur Point 110 points and Queenstown 53. -In the North Island the rainfall has been scattered and comparatively light, and Wellington has escaped altogether. Winds have been from between the north and north-west, and have reached gale force in places in and south of Cook Strait. Locally the wina was strongest between 3 and 5 o clock this morning, when gusts of 5^ miles an hour were recorded at Ke-lbura, ,

,The ■ forecast indicates a continuance of the same winds, with sqnallr and changeable weather generally. Further rain is probable,- but precipitation in eastern districts will be scattered and light. The western part of the South Island may expect the heaviest falls. Temperatures are-likely to remain mild. -
