UNIVERSITY AND ORIENTAL.

There were many absentees from the University team when it met Oriental at Prince of Wales Park on Saturday. Oriental had the better of the game, but besides being often out of place when near the University line, the Oriental backs showed little dash in their occasional pass-

ing bouts, although their defensive work was good. The Oriental pack were superior in the loose, and managed to get a large share of the ball from the scrums. The University forwards played a fine game, but their backs were weak. F. Cormack played excellently as full-back. The teanis were:— University: F. Cormack; Foden, Irwin, Tier; Griffin, Arndt; Eodger; Grant; Blakeney, Hislop, H. Cormack, Eussell, Edgar, Grant, Dixon. Oriental: Lochore; Eeed, Wyman, Paeknatz; Davies, Sharp; Chambers; Fox; Tasker, Smith, Graham, Bolton, Cane, Taylor, Ward. Oriental kicked off, but a movement down field by University kept play in the Oriental twenty-five until a free kick relieved. Oriental came down to the University line with short, sharp passes, but a long kick by Cormack put play back to the half-way, from whence University instituted a strong counter-attack. From the University twenty-five Fox picked up, and made a great run of 50 yards before being tackled. Play fluctuated with periods of strong Oriental attack. Oriental kept pressing on the University line, until a long kick down-field gave University relief. Oriental came away again, and a force down resulted. It was now Universtiy's turn to attack, and the forwards carried play to the Oriental twenty-five, but a free kick sent the ball hack to the halfway. A long kick to the Oriental line gave University another chance, and after Fox had saved his side by a clever breakaway, a quick forward movement by the University forwards caught Oriental unawares, and Blakeney finished off the movement with a try. H. Cormack converted. Oriental pressed hard from the kick off, and managed to cross the line, but there lost the ball. University 5, Oriental 0. Oriental opened the second spell well, but again Cormaek's fine kicking kept them out of University's territory. University pressed, and as play swung back,to the half-way line, Eodger sent his backs away in the best back movement of the day, which ended in Fodeu being thrown out near the corner flag. After further good play between University backs and forwards, Oriental carried the game to the centre of the field. A bright bout of inpassing between backs and forwards culminated in Packnatz crossing the line for Lochore to convert. Fox next broke away from a strong University attack, and after Lochore had kicked the ball into the University twenty-five, a good run by Dixon put University out of danger. From an exchange of kicks between the full-backs, play became centred in midfield. University broke away once, but Oriental were now playing with great dash. They kept the ball in the forwards to go down-field in strong dribbling rushes. Just as often as University would work play back to the half-way, they would break way, and with Fox to lead tho pack, hammer at University's line. Towards the close of the game, University began to return the attack. University backs and forwards combined in a great rush that just failed on the line. Later an attempted "pot" missed the posts by inches. Time was called with University still attacking. University 5, Oriental 5. Mr. D. Calcinai was the referee.
