The Secretary of State, Colonel Stimsoii, to-day issued a statement warning taxpayers of the United States against the cost involved in the contemplated naval armaments, if reductions are not promptly made. He stated that the immense material burden involved I increases with every fresh discovery in warfare, and explained that he had in his possession a memorandum from the directors' budget showing "that the unauthorised and contemplated programme for the construction of new ships alone amounts to 1,170,800,000 doHars," to which must be added the increased budget for the operation of the ships. He pointed out that "with a sitiilar expenditure among most of the countries of the world the next fifteen years' economic burden to the world can well be realised."
