HONOURS WELL-EARNED
Recipients of the Birthday honours announced to-day will have the gratification of knowing that their choice by the Sovereign for distinction is fully endorsed by the people in whose'service they have earned that reward. Mr. Justice Herdman was an able and efficient Attorney-General and he has since devoted a decade to the arduous labours of the Judiciary, attaining the position of senior Judge. Both as politician and as Judge he has commanded the respect of the community. Mr. Henry Buckleton's knighthood is a recognition of the service given to the community by the administrators of our banking system. When Mr. Buckleton attained his jubilee of service we emphasised how greatly the community was indebted to such men, who, year by year and day by day,. had a great responsibility in maintaining private and public finance upon a safe basis. Mr. Buckletdn is not a public man in the usual sense of the term, and. he has never sought publicity; but his work is known to all who are interested in New Zealand finance, and all will agree in congratulating him upon receipt of a well-deserved honour. Dr. Cockayne's honour is the Royal endorsement of many distinctions conferred upon a notable scientist by his scientific colleagues. His work has been recognised in many parts of the world as a notable contribution to botanical studies. The Civil Service recipients, Mr. Hayes and Mr. Rowley, have also merited the honours conferred upon them.' Secretaryship of the Treasury, with its responsibility for finance, is work of the highest value to the country. The greatest tribute that can be paid to Mr. Rowley's control of the Labour Department is the fact that his office has received little public, attention, proving that it is doing efficiently what is desired of it, and helping to maintain the harmony of Capital and Labour.
