AT OTAKI

CUP TO LADY LIMOND

MAUI WINS HUIA HAISTOICAP

The Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter Meeting opened auspiciously on Saturday ia perfect weather, and before an unusually large attendance for a first day. The racegoers, of whom a big contingent travelled from Wellington, were treated to a day of attractive racing and close finishes. For the time of the year the track was in excellent order and held out well. Events were run well to' time, the last race being over early enough to allow patrons to catch the early trains to Wel'ington and Palmerston. I Form worked out reasonably well, most of the horses which had run prominently recently being in evidence. Lady Limond easily accounted for the Raukawa Cup Handicap, leading practically all the way and finishing very fit. The other-big race, the Huia Handicap, went to Maui, who made a brilliant run from well back. The totalisator handled £16,913, as compared with £14,925 10s on the first day last year, an increase of £1987 10s. Following are descriptions of races decided after "The Post" went to press:— HUIA HANDICAP. The first to show out were Toapaiti, Consent, Piuthair, First Acre, Bonogne, and Broad Acre. At the half-mile post loapaiti and Consent were together folowed by First Acre, Broad Acre, Cerf .-.onogne, and Piuthair. There was no alteration m the leading positions going to the straight, but once in the-straight Consent drew clear. Over the last few chains, however. Mam and Moutoa Treasury come fast, and in a fine finish Maui beat Consent by a short head, with Moutoa Treasury another neck away. Toapaiti was an indifferent fourth. TE HORO HANDICAP. \r-Thv ■?"* to, show out were Metellus, Vindication, Mothplane, Malahat, and High Society, with Kilorell heading the others. Racing at the back, High Society Z*l f^ nt, from Malahat, Monetize, Metellus, Mothplane, and Vindication. At the half-mile post, High Society and Monetize were together, followed by Malahat, Metellus, Mothplane, Killorell, and Vindication Racing to the turn, Monetize and High Society led from Metellus. Malahat, and Mothplane. Once in line for home, High Society took charge, but was immediately challenged by Mitellus In' a great race to the post, High Society ran on well enough to win by a head from Metellus Kilorell was two lengths away third, and Malahat fourth. COMMENTS ON THE RACING. Red Bank, who was installed a good favourite in the Tararua Hack Hurdles gave his supporters a poor run, as he fell at the initial jump Lady Gay was always well placed, and. stayed on too well for Sneerer whose rider tried to win all the way. But for jumping badly, Modern must have proved hard to beat. Peshwa went a fair aftered °f condition was con-. Zarene had been responsible for great track work prior to the meeting, and was M °Si f« a certainty in the Kuku Maiden Flat Race. So it proved for jumping out smartly, she led all the way rmbT TPi ?T" c ran her best ™"" pubhc, but had to do her best to beat Grattan, who went a good race. Catuna finished on over a beaten lot. Roundelay showed a lot of pace for five furlong^ and Warzone shaped fairly' well Second Thought had a good run through°Ut mJH Waitohu Hack Handicap, and T Vew I fina' stage proved too sohd for Lucky .Bag. The latter ran an excellent race as did Golden Flower, tat Propaganda, who was supported as if a certainty, failed to run up to expectations. Dermod ran a fair race. Lady Limond looked a much better mare for the Raukawa Cup Handicap than at Wanganui, and her victory was full of merit, as she led practically throughout, and at the finish was doing better than any of her opponents. Paitonu carried his big weight courageously, but was a trifle lucky to beat Briar Root. The last-named was hampered by Paitonu boring in Tresham, who looked remarkably well, was closer at the finish than at any other, stage. Vigorous horsemanship by L. G. Morris on Disrank was a factor in the success of that gelding in the Otaki Hack Handicap, but nevertheless Disrank finished generously. Gold Bag put up a big fight, 2 • u M.i d? e for a win BOon- R(»'al Black finished best of all runners, but Skyrider had every chance. Maui registered a good performance to win the open sprint event, the Huia Handicap. that he was some lengths behind Consent and Toapaiti at the home turn, the rider of Consent thought he had the event won once he got to the front, and it certainly looked as if Consent should have won. Moutoa Treasury moved short in" her preliminary, but she ran a fine race. After a long spell, Toapaiti made his reappearance to race creditably After his disappointing form at Waganui regular racegoers did not expect High Society to run 'out a seven-furlong course in the Te Horo Hack Handicap, but fin?fc dA& and beat Metellu. in a hard I?™L £?. F a, I number °f disappointing displays, Kilorell ran a (rood race into third place Malahat, Monefe, and M oth ° plane went fair races.
