VICE-REGAL BALL
MANY DEBUTANTES
A largely-attended and very delightful ball was given at Government House, Auckland, on Thursday evening by Their Excellencies the Gover-nor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson. Special interest was attached to it, as there were 80 many debutantes, probably the largest number that have yet made an appearance all together at Government House for many years (states the "New Zealand Herald"). Brilliantly lit both inside and. out, with trees in the avenue outlined with tiny-coloured lights, the scene that presented itself was picturesque and very attractive. Flowering pot plants ana great clusters of cut flowers and winter foliage added their colour and fragrance to the reception rooms in which bright fires were burning, vieiug with the warm yet delicate shades of the many charming frocks that were to be seen. In the ballroom the front of the orchestral stand was massed with ferns and pot plants, and overhead lines of feathery lyeopodium and baskets -of luxuriant fern gave a delightful effect against the background of white walls and ceiling. As a setting to a scene in which the most varied colours intermingled and harmonised to a wonder- ] ful extent, it was particularly successful. In the supper rooms the tables were arranged with beautiful roses in large silver bowls. Before the ball actually commenced the debutantes, about 34 ,in number, were presented to the Governor-General and Lady Alice Ferguson in the draw-ing-room. With their fresh youth and dainty froeking they made a delightful group, and in most cases they had chosen the traditional white in which to make their appearance. At 9 o'clock dancing commenced in the ballroom. Her Excellency wore a frock of blush rose pink moire, the skirt, longer at the back, being made with deep flare 3 and the corsage, which was draped with goorgetto, embroidered with diamante. Mrs. George Baird was in a frock of black and gold brocade with heavy gold embroidery on the skirt. Countess Thelma Metaxa wore a frock of blue georgette embroidered in silver and crystal beading.
