FAMOUS BACHELORS

Writing in the Newcastle "WeeklyChronicle" of famous'men. who have preferred single blessedness, a contributor says: "The present Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Lang, is still a bachelor in spite of Queen Victoria's advice— 'Why :not dismiss three ■ curates and have a wife" instead?' To the Queen's remark he replied, 'I can always dismiss curates, Your Majesty; I could never dismiss a wife.' Nine of our present bishops have followed his example. Lord Balfour, the only bachelor Prime Minister of modern times, was once rumoured to be engaged to the lady who is now Lady Oxford. One day he coldly shattered the rumour.- 'I rather think of having a career of my own,' he said. Three of our most famous Judges of the day are" bachelors—Mr. Justice Sankey, Lord Blanesburgh, and Mr. Justice M'Cardie. Among living bachelor politicians, with plenty of money and several homes to share with a wife, are Lord Hugh Cecil, Sir Eobert Home, and Sir Philip Sassoon. The late Lord Haitians never married."
