DUNEDIN ATHLETES

MAY ••■'LOSE ■■' HEADQUARTERS

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

i "DUNEDIN, This Day.

There is every possibility of the amateur, athletic authorities having to look for a new homo next season. For many years past the. headquarters havebeen at the Caledonian Ground, but the Caledonian Society has. given an option over this ground for a'lease from next year to 'people interested in the formation of a speedway for broadsiding. . The option has not yet been signed, but ;intiination has been received that the Caledonian Society's conditions are likely to be accepted. This means that cycling on the banked track will-be a thing of the past, as the present track will of course be torn up. The athletic bodies will still be able to lease the ground on all but Saturday nights, but grass tra«k cycle riding would not be satisfactory and the athletic centre may look about for another, ground. Developments are awaited with interest.

The first harrier race of the season in Dunedin is the Edniond Cup steeplechase- at Wingatui, under the control of the Dunedin Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club, and present ,indications are that, last year's -record field will be surpassed on this occasion. Last season 159 runners started in this difficult three mile- event, arid nearly all; finished. -•■ ' ' :

Judging by the- Keenness ,'shown, -by the numerous harrierclubs already this season-,, there will be an even bigger field when this year's race is decided on Bth June. >

For the first time in- Otago a fiftymile Otago road cycling championship is being held this season; 1 . The.Otago Centre- has granted permission to the Pacific Club to control this-fixture;- It is many years since the Otago Centre was in a stronger financial position than at present, and recently it: decided to invest £3.50 in one of the banks. When the annual.meeting" conies round there should be a balance "of over £200.
