Automatically • with, an increase in tho cost of living in Australia the wages paid under Federal awards increase correspondingly. The ActingPremier announced ,to-day that the latest . increase ■of 4s in the Federal basic wage would involve an extra expenditure of £425,000, chiefly in' the railways and tramway services.

The matter is -causing grave, concern also among private employers and Customs authorities, who state that they are unable effectively to control tariff operations owing to the ever-recurring sharp rises in the cost of production. It is feared that grave, additional unemployment will soon result.
