CAMPBELL'S ACHIEVEMENT
MOTOR SPEEDING AT VEJRNEUK

CAPETOWN, 26th. April.
After twenty-four hours' isolation, due to electrical storms, Captain Campbell broke' the world's five miles and five kilometre records at 'Verenk Pan to-day. The average speed over the five miles equalled 212 miles an hour, beating the previous record by 72 m.p.h. The average speed in the five kilometres ,was 211 miles' per hour. ! "The' ear was marvellous," said Campbell, "but look at the tires," pointing to the back tiro, from which the tread was stripped. '"Hearing the -red flag at the mile I. wondered whether that tiro would hold. The mixture, was too weak this time for the'intense cold. No oiio ever raced at this altitude before. The engine was very hot. I had to use both hands to change the gear. Well, it's 1 finished." " ■. ■■•
