OTAGO BOXING

PROMISING AMATEUR

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN,' This Day

In amateur ranks it is .often possible to sort out a boy of distinct potentialities as a iirofessional fighter, and in Dunedin at the present time there is one lad who -impresses greatly as being likely to develop: iuto a champion in-.the..course of a year or two. He is Bert Lowe, lightweight, who is 'with Tommy Harris; Lea Murray's old trainer. Lowe is still a 'youngster, being only seventeen, but at the military tournaments he has along string of knock-out* to,his credit, and he is no wild fighter, but a good hard puncher, able to use both hands with a deadly left hook as his principal weapon. • He has not yet done a great deal of' boxing' in the open, but' in, a preliminary recently - knocked out his opponent, a useful lightweight, in. the second round. ' • ... , . ■■.. Lowe is still in the novice stages,, but he is improving all the time. He is a;fine stamp of lad with powerful shoulders and good arms, and one highly experienced - judge of the game reckons that, properly handled, he has great possibilities in. a few years' time. \ ■ ' ■' It is understood that Jack Paul will not be available for a professional fight Svith Artie Hay owing to the purse being only £100, and the Otago Boxings Association intends getting, into touch with: Reg ' Trowern with a. view to matching him with Hay on 11th May or the following week. Though Paul: beat Troweru, it was-not, a very inspiring.fight, and -hewould have been wise to.', accept.'the. present offer with a .view to proving that his recent display was not in accord with" his best form. ; .' ■■■-■*•■ The Otago Boxing Association intends staging several big amateur, tournaments' i in the near future.: The first, a: novice tourney, -' has been set down for' next mouth. There are, more-boys in. commission at the eight; local, schools than there have been for years past, :and ; some good material should be seen in action. An open tournament will be 1 held in' June, and the Otago championships in.the following month. 1 '"■"■."■ '
