AT RICHMOND

SPRINT TO ARCH ARROW

RABBI WINS THE CUP

i (By Telegraph, from "Vedette") The Nelson district lived well up to Ha reputation for sunshine yesterday for the opAling of the local club's annual meeting at the old Richmond course. A good deal : of rain had fallen, and the track was very spft' for some two furlongs from the fivcfurlong post onwards. There was a fair muster of patrons, the totalisator returns being. £8752, compared with £7184 last year.' / ' ' " Rabbi won the Cup in good stylo from the Trentham-trained Black Mint, . who was hot too fortunate in the running ot the race. The sprint went to Arch Arrow, trained at Riccarton, with the South Canterbury representative Ronaki runner-up. Produced again, Ronaki won the concluding' event from three others. ' ■ Perhaps the most creditable feature 'of the meeting was .the celerity with which tbe. totalisator business was handled, ihe balancing was done with the utmost dispatch, and the dividends were hoisted bOT • fore the horses were back in the birdcage. NbVICE STAKES. ' Acredity was backed down to odds on. Dancing 'Star and Sambur began jcry smartly from Make Up and Acredity.l hey raced this way to the bend, where Acredity moved up, coming on in the straight to win easily by two lengths from Make Up, who finished on to beat Sambur by halt a length: Araemo was fourth, and Dancing .Star.fifth. ■ ' ' . -„.., Acredity, the only two-year-old in the field, a filly by Acre from Absurdity, won very easily. Make Up, a three-year-old colt by Surveyor from Rosen er, may see a better day. Sambur showed some pace, and Araemo could not go in the ground. Dancing Star was well beaten at the end . of ;half a mila RICHMOND TROT. Denver Hinds, a five-year-old mare by Denver Huon from a Lyonaise mare, backed, down to odds on, took charge five furlongs from home, and won comfortably from Waipuki, who was at well over double figures to win. Great Wilkes, who dropped out in the middle stages, finished on into third."place. Hardiness was fourth, and Lady Bee next. Lady Audubon did not begin correctly, and was always well in the rear. Great Wilkes looks the uke- ■ ]>• improver. ■ , NELSON CUP. ■: Black Mint was backed down to a short price, with Rameses easily second choice, and Rabbi paying a longish price. _Kilbronsyth, Rameses, Rabbi. Borsalene, JLady Gay, and Black Mint was the order for Hired furlongs, '"and 'then" Gooses top and Twink moved up behind Rameses and Rabbi, with' Discourse and Black Mint nest. Black Mint went up and joined Rameses in front five furlongs from home, and the pair drew clear of Rabbi, Discourse, Goosestep, and Twink. Rabbi and Goosestep drew up with Black Mint and Rameses as they turned for home. Rameses was the first of these beaten, and Rabbi and Goosestep headed offi , Black Mint. Ra^_^rU- drew out to win by a length from Black Mint, who finished on again to beat Goosestep by a nose. Borsalene was fourth, and Lady Gay and Kilbronsyth next. _ ■ Rabbi won really well, and was admirably handled By the lightweight, K. Voitre. Black Mint was asked to win a long way from home; and if he and Rameses had not cut at each other, either would have done better.. Black Mint stuck on very well, although beaten. Goosestep ran a decent race, and just weakened a trifle at the 'finish. Borsalene stuck on surprisingly well, and Lady Gay ran a useful race. Kilbronsyth. was, anything but well ridden, and he should soon make amends forthis failure. Rameses dropped, out completely; over the last bit. Discourse ran below her best form. HOPE HACK HANDICAP. Kiriana and Masher were both well backed, with Fallow, the eventual winner, •at a.-double-figure price. Lucklaine was left at the post, and Smithereens, Catrina, and Kiriana began best. . Catrina took charge at-the end. of a furlong from Fallow and Smithereens, with The Masher and Wreath o' Myrtle next. Catrina turned for home just clear of Smithereens, Fallow, and The Masher. Catrina was done with a fifrkmg from home, and Fallow; came on with Smithereens challenging. A good tussle saw Fallow beat Smithereens by a head, with Kiriana a length and a half away. Catrina was fourth and The Masher and' Shining Star next. Fallow, a small edition by Loyal Sstag from Rose Pink, stuck oiv too well for Smithereens, and spraug a real surprise on most people. He is trained at Porirua by D. Prosser for Mr. W. H. Balhnger, of. Wellington. Smithereens ran a good race with his 9.6. Kiriana ran a creditable race, and will improve; while Catrina showed up very. well for six furlongs, going well in the ground. The Masher was never a possibility. ■'.■ •'• l STEWARDS' HANDICAP. Last Crust was a £5 better favourite than Maui, with Arch Arrow solidly supported. Arch Arrow, Ronaki,-. and Nasstori began best from Last Crust and Spode, with Fee Simple last. Arch Arrow ' led to the turn from -Nasstori and konaki. with Last Crust handy. Ronaki could, not get to Arch Arrow in the rim, homo. Arch Arrow beating him by three-quarters of a length. Maui was half a length away third, with Nasstori fourth and Last Crust next. ' ■■ ■ " Arch Arrow showed . plenty oi pace 'and stayed on well. Ronaki looked as if he would be improved by the race. Maui finished well' from a good way back, and. Last Crust ran a fair race after not beginning too well. Nasstori should soon do better than this, for T. Metcalf's cap : was down over his eyes for .the greatest; part of the race. : WAI-ITI TROT. Lock Bank and Nellie Parson carried half-the total invested. Belle o' Mine and Allthorpe lost ground at the start, and the race was always confined to Lock Bank, Waipuki, and Lady Bee. Lock Bank won comfortably by a length from Waipuki, who beat Lady Bee by eight lengths.. George the Fourth was fourth. Lock Bank is a six-year-old gelding by Brent Locanda from Midnight. ELECTRIC HACK HANDICAP. • Smitbreeens,.Dermod, Dainty Ways, and Arrow Boy were all well backed. Arrow • Boy, Dermod, Royal Flower, and The .Dove were most prominent over the first furlong, and Arrow-Boy led to the turn from Dermod and The Dove. Dainty Ways and Smithereens joined in two furlongs from home, and over the last furlong J)ormod, Arrow Boy, Smithereens, Dainty .Ways, and The Dove were hard at it 'almost in line. They raced so to the box, Dermod, Arrow Boy, and Smithereens being in the places, with short heads between them. Then almost in line came The Dove and Dainty Ways. Dermod, suited by •■ the going, fought out the finish well, but Smithereens and Dainty Ways were most unlucky, for .they collided at the barrier and K. Voitre al- .' most came off Dainty Ways. They were • only inches away from the winner at the end. Arrow Boy and The Dove both stuck on well. Smithereens did not receive the best of passages in the straight. WAIMEA HANDICAP. Konaki and Miss Mcrcia carried practically all the investments. Miss Mercia led Ronaki. Double Mint, and Modern in

close order "to the turn. Roiuiki stumbled ! and lost a fjngth or so on the turn, but in the mil in came on hard held to win by two. lengths from' Miss Mercia, who beat Moder (i by a length. Double Mint was last ■' Ronaki wrts mucli too-good at the finish and.fairlyioutstayed Miss Mercia. Modern needed the face. | Results:— ' Xorlco St.nte, of SO soys: five furlongs.—l Acredity, T.I I, 1; 2 Mukeup/S.S, 2; 5 Snmbiir, 8.8, .").
