OPENING CLUB RUNS
;liast Saturday afternoon 'marked the opening of the club run's. >:The stead-ily-increasing popularity and progression of the' sport was evidenced by the i large packs, that started out. ■■• All clubs report that their membership cards have almost doubled'in number, which gives every indication- that the season will prove a recordi'Ohe.V ' The Hutt Valley Club' assembled, at the. residence of their oldest and most ardent supporter, Mr.' G. Dome, for the official j openingi last Saturday. The active membership has: now reached the fifty -mark, including a number of lads who are likely to make a convincing showing. The trail of five miles led over some ideal country round Norton Park, •Lojver Hutt, and Wellington. About 400 yards frgm home a run-in was held, and resulted in a win for J. Cutbush, with A. Marshall second, and J. King third. Members were afterwards entertained at afternoon teaj < when the president (Mr. A. Hadley)' took the opportunity of thanking Mr. and Mrs. Dome for their hospitality.. The ladies' branch of the Hutt :Val ; ley Club was also in the hunt on Saturday, and a pack of seven; made an enjoyable run of three miles under the leadership.of Mrs. V., Smith. > Last season there was some talk of the formation of another ladies' branch, but .efforts have apparently failed to materialise/ The Masterton Club has had the object in view for some time now, and rumour is current that a party of ladies intend getting into training immediately. "Paperchaser" hopes that at least one of the Wellington;: clubs will come forward, as Hutt "Valley Ladies' Club has little hope of making good unless some opposition is The:Olympie Club's initial gathering on Saturday at Kelburn. was.very successful, 36 members, donning togs and following a 1 stiff course-of five miles up Wireless Hill ,to Wilton's 'Creek and back ■ over the viaduct.. "The I'run-in | was won by G; Atley,\ with ;M' Naught second, and' Hardy third,. ,V . \ ' The ; Scottish Club's runners met at Mrs. Archer's residence, Wadestown, and run-in honours went to' Franklin, Thompson, and Staple. -.-> ' " J. Shepherd, A. Stoll, and J. O'Brien were the conspicuous runiiers at the Wellington Club's run at Scjatoun. The trail of,five miles led. ro^inc! Worser Bay to Earaka Bay, and back over the hills to Miramaf. ■ A-number of now, runners showed exceptionally good form for their first run. ' Now that, the harrier season has. started, it is advisable to .'give ■ a word of warning to young-memoers. They must not take their training ■operations too seriously. Many lads make the mistake of rushing into t0.6 strenuous training, with the result that.they find themselves stale before interelub events tako place. Leading ' trainers maintain that two night's a week are sufficient to keep aay runner in trim. An athlete who oversteps this may be lucky enough to win an early club race. On the other hand a better club spirit is needed, and athletes should devote their energies to placing their respectivo club on top by means of the interelub fixtures. ' . - r • , .
