WELLINGTON COMPETITIONS

, A meeting o£ the executive 'council o£ the Wellington Competitions Society was held this week, Mr. H. Hatch presiding. Mr. N. Mackenzie Forbes suggested that a champion highland dance be included in the programme, and offered a gold medal for that class. The suggestion was adopted, and Mr. Forbes was thanked for, his offer. It \ras also decided to insert a. clas3 for oration, own selection. Mr. Clement Howe was appointed official accompanist, Mr. Frank Crowther judge in the violin section, and Mr. Mackenzie Forbes judge in the Highland dancing section. The elocution selection committee submitted the following items as test pieces for the next festival, which were adopted:—Test recitation, ladies, "The Sunset in the Trossachs" (Scott); gentlemen, "Ocean's Own" (Lawson); New Zealand author, "A . Maoriland Hymn" (Adamson); Shakespearian recitations, ladies, "Katheriue's Defence"; gentlemen, "Prospero's Abjuration of Magic"; scholarships, 16-21, "The Cloud" (Shelley); 12-16, "The Listeners" (de la Mare); New Zealand Test recitals, ladies, "The Optimist" (Stephens); gentlemen, "The Explorers" (Armstrong); girls, 14-10, "The Musical Festival" (Saville); 12-14, "The Elfin Artist" (Noyes); 9-12, "The Uata Tree" (Lawson); under 9, "Rice Pudding" (Milne); girls, 12-16, restricted, "To the Motherland' (Hinkson); under 12, "Lilies" (Hunt); boys, 115-20, "Hong of the Pacifist" (Service); 12-16, "Patches on the Map" (Hodges); 0-12, "Jim"( Burton); under 9, "Four Friends" (Milne); 12-10, restricted, "Adsum" (Aylward); under 12, restricted, "The Country of Let's Pretend" (Hodges). Tho secretary stated that the syllabus would be issued not later than the end of this month.
