A first offender for drunkenness, 'who had .spent the night in the cells, was convicted and' discharged. .

"She is an old offender, with ; nmotcen previous convictions," said Senior-Sergeant Butler, when Margaret Cusworth, a domestic, aged 45, pleaded guilty to 'her' . second statutory offence of drunkenness. A fine of 10s, in , default three days' imprisonment, was imposed. . The theft of a saw and a plane, valued at £1 8s Cd, was admitted by Martin Francis Carroll; a cabinetmaker, aged CO.. Chief-Detective Ward said that Carroll was given some work repairing/ furniture .-, in a' boarding-house on Wednesday by a lady to..whom he owed money for board incurred in Wanganui. While woi'king about the house he took the plane and saw, which belonged to a boarder,>and sold them to a second-hand dealer for 9s. A day or two later he was seen taking sonic more tools away, and was stopped. Carroll had been before the Court at "Wanganui on 11th June of last year "for theft, and was convicted and ordered to, come up for sentence if called upon. The accused was fined .£5, and was ordered to pay ,9s to the dealer, in default one month's imprisonment.

A charge of having stolen ninepence from a girl's purse at a danco in the Town Hall last night was made against John Clarence Gason, a carpenter, aged 24, for whom Mr. A. J. Mazengarb appeared. A plea of not guilty was entered. The police evidence was to the effect that Gason took the money from the purse, which was left on a seat while the girl was dancing. After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate said he thought it fell a little short of establishing that a theft had been committed by Gason, and dismissed the charge. . '

At the Mount Cook Police Court this morning two first-offending inebriates were convicted and discharged. James Wilson, for his second statutory offence of drunkenness, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Mr. ■\V. H. Jones,. J,P., was on tho Bench.
