Dr. High t, Rector ,of Canterbury College, stated yesterday that the only application made ""by Canterbury College 11.ad -becir niado' along with the -four other colleges through'..thcJ.UnivorsityCouncil. There was absolutely no foundation- at. all for the statement .that Canterbury College had-acted on its own initiative in,the matter. They had received" no official intimation at all. If, as was asserted, .Mr. John Studholme had interviewed the trustees of the corporation while in ' New ' York, ho had done so without: authority' from Canterbury .College, and he was .'- not even'on tho Board of Governors of the college. In reference to the remarks made yesterday by Sir George -Fowlds,. chairman of the Auckland University College, regarding the Carnegie grants, Colonel George Smith, chairman of the Board of Governors of the/Canterbury University College, ;has forwarded the following telegram to Sir George:— ■ ;
"Have read your remarks re Carnegie'.■grants.'. Give you my assurance that all communications on matter from Canterbury College Board have gone through University Office, Wellington, as-arranged, and that we are carrying out agreement strictly/ and honourably. Regret you, did not; coirimunicata with us before suggesting ' smart and dishonourable move' on our part." '.
