MODERN MARRIAGES
HOW THEY GO WRONG
Everyone knows that to many without love is an act inspired by the courage of stupidity. Those who make the experiment deserve what comes to them, writes "A Girl of To-day" iv the "Daily Mail." But the cynics are busy with all aspects of the holy estate, and I ask myself, What is bringing the Heaven-mado variety of matrimony into disrepute?
The answer is quito 'Simple. So ma&y people think that it is sufficient in marriage to love each other and to take no further trouble about it.
This is ludicrous. A musician does not think that it is enough to love music, nor .1 cook that it is enough to love food without working at it. ■ Anything that is worth while at all in this life desowes to liavo trouble taken fov it. • -
Marriage, for a woman at any rate, ia a career like smother. Of all.careers it is'the'ouo most beset'wUh,difficulties, but it is the one,at.which sho. is most capable of excelling., Almost the only one!
A man and a maid marry for love, and they think that life owes them happiness. It does not. Life .owes them nothing. They are already deeply in tho debt of life. -, It, is up to them to make themselves happy.
It is particularly up to the wife, because making a success of the marriage is the only job sho has. If she makes a mess of that she has, unfortunately, made a mess of everything. She has got to be adaptable and unselfish. A selfish husband may bo forgiven, but a selfish, wife is a monstrosity and a buffoon.
Tastes in common are pleasant things, but they arc not essential. Tastes can be acquired, cultivated, mado allowance for —of course, there are peoplo who have radically antagonistic types of mind, and these simply should not marry oach other. Tor their benefit exists the pre-nuptial convention of the engagement. All other differences can bo got over if to love is added a small dogree of courtesy, tolerance, and common sense.
