UNITED STATES FOREIGN TRADE.

The American Trade Commissioner's Office in New Zealand has been officially advised that the foreign trade of the United States . totals, for the year _ 1928 showed merchandise exports amounting to 5,129,132,000 dollars and imports of 4,089,----930,000 dollars, a favourable balance of 1,039,202,000 dollars, the largest since 1921. Almost 45 per .cent, of the gross exports were made up of manufactured goods (2,259,386,000 dollars). Industrial machinery exports amounted to 209,449,000 dollars, which was 27,000,000 dollars greater than in 1927. . Metal working machinery showed the greatest gain, with a total of 36 per cent, greater, than the previous year. Agricultural implement exports exceeded the hundred-million-dollar mark for the first time, the year's total being 116,015,244 dollars, an increase of 25,800,000 dollars over those of 1927. Gold exports totalled 560,759,000 dollars, and imports 165,887,000 dollars, a net export balance o£ 391,872,000 dollars.
