FULL EXCURSION TRAINS

HEAVY RAILWAY BOOKINGS

All the excursion trains from ThornAon Sta.tion wcro packed on Good Friday and on Saturday; and yesterday tire excursion trains from Wellington to I'aekakariki and Pn.lmcrston .North, and from Palmcrston North to 'Wellington were well tilled. All the express trains, also, were full.

Last year East or Monday was very wet, and while this morning the weather was by no means promising, tho sky being overcast, and the wind cold, race-goers were not to be baulked oE thoir sport and the- bookings for Tauherenikau were more than double those for the second day of the Wairarapa Racing Club's corresponding meeting in 1928. The .increase in the number of tickets sold was 158. The bookings for tho Petone Carnival and the Hutt Gala to-day . also., showed a. good increase, and, the- Druids' picnic at Maidstone Park was very well attended.

The Hutt Gala, ; wiiich opened on Saturday in. splendid weather, and was well attended, concludes to-night.. Tho side-shows, the boxing bouts, the merry-go-round, the dancing on the lawn, and the Maori entertsuncrs, were all well patronised, and the seven-a-side Rugby tournament was greatly appreciated. To-day's special, events include Association football matches, and an amateur athletic meeting. Petone's great carnival week, which also had a most successful opening day on Saturday, wns again attended by big holiday crowds to-day. The twen-ty-two Maori entertainers from Levin and Otaki are proving a great draw; and the merrv-go-vound, the cnair-o-. plane, the ocean wave, and tho numerous other sid« shows, all have- their full share- of patrons.: ■ On Easter . Sunday considerable crowds watchea with great interest .Miss Lily Copplestono's plucky attempt to swim the harbour. Unfortunately the -weather conditions were by no means favourable. A cold wind was blowing, :and there were one or two showers. .. Eventually tho rough, choppy seas,resulted in the swimmer having to abandon tho enterprise when within two mtles'of .her objective..*! ;■■.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds of thcEastcra Suburbs' Bowling Tournament was played on Saturday; sectional play will be completed to-day weather ■■ permitting, and tho post-sec-tion and iinn.l games will be played on tho Hataitai Club's green to-mor-row. : '"''.'■
