WAR RELIEF

FUNDS TO LAST FIVE YEARS

A mooting of the executive committee of the Wellington War Belief Association was held this afternoon, Mr. L. O. H. Tripp presiding. .The other members .present were Messrs. G. Mitchell, C. M. Luke, and .C. Watsons Apologies for absence were received from Messrs.- A. .M'lntosh and Harrison. ■ '

The Applications and Emergency Committee reported that since 20th February last 296 claims had been received, comprising 32 claims from men who had not previously approached the committee, and 264 from previous, applicants. Fifty-one of the applications were still under action. Including tho claims submitted to the Finance Committee, the total number of claims received was 309. Assistance differing widely in description had been given to partially disabled soldiers, to others who were discharged fit and subsequently developed a war disability, to the widowed mother? and widows of soldiers who fell in action, and in other directions, k

The :report was adopted on the motion of Mr. Mitchell.

The report of the Finance Committee, adopted on the motion of Mr. Luke, showed that of the thirteen applications dealt with by it since 20th February, sis were new applications for loans. Two of these had been approved; whife the remaining four, being in no way attributable to, or-caused by, .war service, were declined. The other seven applications were for the revision of the original terms of repayment of loans granted. "

Tho financial statement showed that the total available funds as at 28th February, 1929, were: Investments, £24,000; current accounts, £102 lls 10dpetty cash, £30; total, £24,132 11s lOd. Mr. Mitchell asked the chairman whether it was correct that the funds now in hand would see the association over another five years only at the .present rato of progress. " ,-'.- . Mr. Tripp: "Yes, that is so." Mr. Luke: "There may be less unemployment this year than last, and consequently a smaller demand on the funds. We are not feeling the same pressure at the Social Welfare Committee that we did at this time last year."
