SHORT FRUIT SHIPMENT

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 27th March. It is now -expected that the. Middlesex will be able to load only 40,000 cases of fruit at Nelson, instead of the 60,000 for ■which space was available. Wet weather yesterday and to-day has considerably interfered with work in the orchards and packing sheds, and the fruit has not come forward in as large quantities as was expected. An unavailing effort was made to detain the vessel over Easter. She saila for Picton to-morrow flight. Another small outbreak of fire brought tho brigade out last night. At about 8.16 p.m. a wall in the kitchen of Mr. J. D. Moriarity's residence in Bridge street wan fbund to be alight. The damage was small. This is the third night in succession that an alarm has been given for similar small outbreaks. "While under the influence of drink 'after a trip ashore yesterday John Grant,, a steward on tho Middlesex, struck the chief steward. He appeared before Justices at the Magistrate's Court to-day, and, after promising to keep away from liquor on the voyage Home, was convicted and discharged. The Town Clerk (Mr. G. A. Edmonds) returned to Nelson this morning, accompanied by Mrs. Edmonds, after a holiday in the North Island. "The New Reveille" season at the Majestic Theatre ended last night. The players received many bouquets and boxes of chocolates. There is every probability that the Allan Wilkie Shakespearian Company will visit Nelson. If this comes about the season" will commence about 29th May. The Waimea Tennis Association won a match against the Motueka Association by 19 sets (169 games) to 13 sets (159 games). The Nelson Lawn Tennis Club's tournament will occupy Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday. The annual Fire Brigade Carnival will be held at Motueka on Easter Monday.
