A reduction of 11S,OOO in tho number of registered unemployed during the week ending 11th March marks the continuation of the downward tendency noted in tho figures sinco the year began. Tho frosty weather, which stopped building operations, inland water transport, and other occupations, caused a temporary increase in the unemployed, but tho present returns compared with those of 18tl! February, when tho effect of frost was most acutely folt, show a reduction of over 189,000. Cold weather on the other hand stimulated the mining industry, which has, apart from this ho)p, shown a recovery in the last month, particularly in regard to exports. Thero aro other indications of a general and persistent industrial improvement.
