MYSTERIOUS GLARE

NO MISSING GRAFT

Speculation lias been rife around the waterfront to-day as to the fact or fancy ol! a glare reported to have been si!un on tho sea iv the vicinity of Kapili Island last evening. At about luilfjiast 7 the glare was reported to the Marine Department by the Postmaster, at Paraparumu, and the Department consequently got in touch with Mr. Webber, tho .Government custodian on the island, by medium of the 2YA broadcasting station, and requested him to signal with flares as to whether he received the message and whether help was needed. Mr. Webber signalled that he had received the broadcast message, but he gave no sign that help was needed. Subsequently a report was received from Otaki that a faint glare could be seen on the horizon westward of Kapiti Island. It was thought in some quarters last night that the glare was probably caused by one of the fishing launches catching lire, but inquiries this morning proved that tho three launches that went out from Island Bay last night were safe. All the coastal vessels that were anywhere hi 'the vicinity have also been accounted.for. A possible explanation is that the light came from tho Futurist, which was trawling in the Strait at the time.
