GOOD TEAM WORK

SURFACING A EOAD

The excessively high crown of Main road. Lower Hutt, has long caused serious iriconvenience, even danger, to the travelling public, and the* local council has this year determined to improve matters by reduction of the crown.

Some weeks ago the work was commenced, and for several days it proceeded merrily. Subsequently weak spots became evident. The borough staff then excavated the whole of the weak, clayey subsoil, timber, etc., filling in the excavations witty'solid rock. Many hundreds of yards were packed and consolidated in this way. By excellent team work between the Highways Board staff and that of the Borough Council, a strenuous endeavour was made to complete the work before the date fixed for tho opening of the new bridge, 14th March.'

The recent heavy weather has caused considerable delay, but it is understood that conversationsl have taken place between Mr. Kobertson, of the Wellington City Council staff, and the borough engineer, Mr. A. G. Bush, which have resulted in the working hours being increased in an endeavour to complete the work before to-morrow. If this can

bo effected it will testify to tho excellent relationship existing between the bodies concerned, and enhance the reputation of the Highways Board and its officers..

The work when finished will practically complete the Highway Board's programme to Taita Gorge.
