WELLINGTON CENTRE

BARNETT TIKI MATCHES

A meeting of the Wellington Bowling Centre was held last evening in the "Wellington Club's clubhouse, Mr. Marcus Marks presiding.

Particulars were received in regard to the Piji and Suva bowling carnival, to be held during July, from the 6th to about 18th. The honorary secretary, Mr. E. W. Shallcrass, reported that the most suitable steamers were the Tofua, leaving Auckland on 15th June (arriving at Suva on 20th June) and the Makura, leaving Auckland on 2nd July (arriving sth July). Returning vessels leave Suva on 12th July and Ist and 9th August. Two rinks are required to form a State team, and the New Zealand representatives will be selected from those who express their desire to take part. Nominations are to be forwarded to Mr. Shallcrass not later than the end of May. The competitions arranged are the interstate pennants, open rink, pairs, and singles championships. The following proposals were placed before the meeting by Mr. Marks regarding the playing of Barnett Tiki" matches: —(1) That, subject to the approval of the Christchurch Centre, the next game for the Barnett Tiki be played at Christehurch, and afterwards alternately in Wellington and Christchurch; (2) that the matches be played on the day preceding the games between the Christchurch and Wellington Clubs for the "Friendly ■Bowl" and the annual match between St. Albans and Victoria Clubs; (3) that the Wellington and Victoria Clubs be requested to fix the date for playing their annual fixtures in conference with representatives from the Centre, so that a time mutually agreeable may be chosen; (4) that the number of rinks to play for the Barnett Tiki be decided by the visiting Centre, but in no case to be less than four and more than seven; (5) that the match be one of 21 heads, the aggregate score to decide the result, and in the event of a tie the holders will retain the trophy. Mr. Marks said that the proposals were acceptable to Christchureh, and should result in the competition being put on a very satisfactory footing. In reply to a point made that the holding of Tiki matches on the day preceding friendly matches between Wellington and Christchurch Clubs might tend to the Tiki competition being confined-to those particular clubs, Mr. Marks said that that was certainly not the intention; as in the past, all clubs in either centre would be invited to enter for the competition. The arrangement had been suggested as a means:; whereby possible difficulties in regard to shortages in visiting teamß would be overcome. The delegates expressed gratification that a satisfactory scheme had been evolved, and formally recorded their thanks to the committee which had had the matter in hand.

It was unanimously resolved, upon the motion of Mr. S. M. Stone, that Centre badges, to be worn by representative players, should be struck. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Marks, Shallcrass, and TCershaw, was ,set up to arrange rinks, etc., for the visit of ten rinks from the Manawatu Centre on Wednesday, 27th instant.
