AUCKLAND, 11th March. Larly this afternoon Detective-Sergeant M'Hugh arrested William JohnHogan at the wharves charging him with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Hogan appeared before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court later, pleading guilty to the charge. Chief-Detective Hammond produced a double chart which had been seized. This was at £8 to 2s 6d on the Thompson and Railway Handicaps for the Wellington races. •

Hogan said he used to be a wharf labourer, but lately had been in ill-health. "I took an £8 risk," he said. . "I think you took a £10 risk," said Mr. Cutten, in fining defendant that stun.
