NEEDLEMEN
Not many New Year customs are as quaint as that which is identified with Queen's College, Oxford. The college was founded by Robert of Eglesfield, chaplain to Phillipa, Queen to Edward 111., who became patron of the college. Robert had not much money, but was keen on thrift, and through that his memory is well preserved. On New Year's Day those who dine in Hall receive from the bursar a needle threaded with silk ("aiguille et fil"—Egleafield), and with the admonition: "Take this and be thrifty.'-'
