SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS

A combined general and social meeting of the Society of Musicians was held at the Pioneer Club Rooms on Saturday evening. After a short business discussion, an excellent programme of music was enjoyed. Mr. L. F. Watkins (president), welcomed back to Wellington Mr. Claude Tanner, the Wellington /cellist, who has just recently returned from the Royal Academy, London, where he was subprofessor. Mr. Tanner played a sonata by Henry Eccles, the charming simplicity and style of which, suited his polished technique admirably. He was accompanied at the piano by Miss Valeric Corliss, L.E.A.M. Mrs. Freida Shaw, the possessor of a beautiful contralto, sang with great feeling the "Hindu Bong" of Bemberg. She was accompanier by Mr. Trevor, Fisher. Mr. Tanner then gave a splendid performance of Granville Bantock's "Hebrew Melody." Another composition of Bantock, "The Feast of Lanterns," was sung beautifully by Mrs. Shaw, who gave also Martin Shaw's wonderful "Japanese Death Song." To finish the programme Mr. Tanner played a short piece by>Faure; the distinguished French composer.
