SHOPKEEPER FINED

Two charges of selling milk not complying with the standard were admitted by Kathleen Bardebes in the Magistrate's Court to-day. .':

Senior-Sergeant Butler said that oh tho occasion of the inspector's first visit the milk under test showed 13 per cent, added water and on the second occasion 17 per cent, added water.

For the defendant, Mr. W. E. Leicester said the offences were committed more through .carelessness than with any dishonest purpose. The defendant was in a small way of business, her whole profit a day on the milk she sold being only 2s 6d.

Mr.-Hunt: "If you add on 10 per cent, water she makes more." (Laughter.) Counsel: "Quite so, sir, if one assumes she put it in."

Counsel askea that the defendant be fined on one charge only. Mr. Hunt: "She hasn't even got the excuse of carrying it around in a shower of rain." (Laughter.)

Counsel: "That is so worn out that I wouldn't dare put it up in any case." (Laughter.) ..,'.. .The Magistrate said that the public must be protected in cases of this sort. Mothers might'be feeding babies on this milk. The defendant was fined £5 on the first charge, and £2 JOs on the second. ,
