CINEMA QUOTA
SOME EXEMPTIONS
Exemption from the provisions of the Cinematograph Films Act of last year, requiring renters to acquire 7^ per cent, of British films during the current year, tho first of the operation of the new quota law, is granted by "Gazette" notice published last night to the Famous Lasky Film Service (N.Z.), Ltd., the Fox Film Corporation (Australasia), Ltd., and the Universal Film Manufacturing Co. (Australasia), Ltd.
It was ascertained on inquiry from the Internal Affairs Department that the various film renting firms were recently asked by circular to indicate the amount of film required to fulfil the British quota obligations for this year, and that the three film corporations named replied that they were not in a position to give a definite answer. Tho Department ascertained that there was already available in New Zealand sufficient British film to satisfy the purpose of the exhibitors, who "are required to show 5 per cent, of British films during 1929-30, and it has therefore been decided to allow the renting companies referred to to be exempt from the provisions of the Act for the year.
