OWNERSHIP OF LAKE
CLAIM BY MAORIS

AUCKLAND, This Day. The Native Land Court sat at Kaikohe yesterday to consider claims by Natives of the various sub-tribes of the Ngapuhi to possession of the bed of Lake Oinapere.
The claims made by the Maoris were not only for the bed of tho lake, but included fishing rights. An important part of their food supply comes from the lake, in which they catch from 2000 to 3000 eels every season.' The Court was adjourned to Auckland where legal, argument will be heard.
_ Tho case involves many technicalities. If the Natives' claims are successful the case will again come on for hearing at Kaikohe in order to define the ownership as among the subtribes interested., :
