HUTT ROAD PIER
DEMAND FOB REMOVAL
The large pier in the centre of tho Hutt road, erected in connection with the Tawa Flat railway deviation, was again discussed by the executive of the Wellington. Automobile Club last evening, when it instructed its representatives on the City and Suburban Highways Board to press for a combined deputation from public bodies -to tho Prime Minister with a view to endeavouring' to have the obstruction, which was described as a serious menace to traffic, removed.
In a letter to the executive, Mr. J. D. Holmes, M.lnst. C.K., pointed out that the pier had been constructed in defiance of the wishes of a large number of people, and, in his opinion, it was unsafe for the users of the onlymain 'thoroughfare to and from the city. The steel work had not been erected yet, -and he would suggest that the pier be removed and a bridgo substituted. • As an engineer, he could say that that could be easily done
11l the discussion that followed the reading of the letter, members raised the question as to whether there would be much success if the subject were rcopenecL
Mr. I: V. Wilson said that the club should take every step possible to endeavour to have the pier removed. As sure as fate there would be a serious accident if the pier were allowed to remain.
Mr. A. Warburton expressed the opinion that tho increase of-traffic on the Hutt road would compel the removal of the pier. . .
Mr. 1\ W. Manton said that a pier in a sinii!;:- position at Auckland had been removed after it had been placed in position.' It was decided that the club's representatives on the City and Suburban Highways Board should bring the matter before the board and endeavour to arrange a deputation to the Prime Minister from tho local bodies of the district.
