SWIMMING CARNIVAL

NELSON, 27th February.

A large gathering of parishioners o£ All Saints' Church was held in All Saints' Schoolroom last night to farewell Mr. C. W. .Haskell, an accepted missionary of the New Zealand Church Missionary Society, who left by the Arahura. for Wellington to-night on his way to College House, Christchurch, where he will continue his studies. The vicar (Archdeacon Dart) and other speakers commended Mr. Haskell for his work for the church.

The Association football season is having an early start in Nelson this year. On Saturday next a representative Nelson team will meet a team from H.M.S. Veronica. These opponents met last year on the ship's previous visit, and the result was a draw, one goal each.

Waller Moyriek, a seaman, had his left arm fractured this morning when a motorcycle he was riding got out o£ coutrol and plunged through the chains on Haven road at Port Nelson into the sea. Meyrick was turning the machine round at the time. He was admitted to the Public Hospital. ■

Messrs. E. "]?. Dodson and T. E. Easterfield, winners of the. Nelson Science Scholarship and a Junior University Scholarship at Nelson College last year, will both take lectures at Canterbury University College during the coming year. Mr. Easteriield left for the South, accompanied by his parents, Professor and Mrs. Easterh'eld, last night. Mr. Dodson goes overland by ear on Friday morning.

Another swimming carnival was held at the municipal baths last night. Amongst the competitors were W. Cameron, of Wellington, and his brother, J. Cameron, of Blenheim, and during the evening they gave a much applauded exhibition of swimming and "diving. The 100 yards Centre / Championship resulted: Eales (Blenheim) 1, J. Cameron (Blenheim) 2. Time, Cssec. The 100 yards Interclub Handicap was won by W. Cameron (scr). The winner was not extended. J. Cameron and Eales were the only other starters. Time, 58 2-ssee.

At Upper Moutere the Brightwater cricket team, who are leading in the Waimea Association Championship, were defeated by 35 runs. Upper Moutere's first innings realised 128, including 72 by T. Drogemnllev. Bowling for Brightwater, K. Lines took eight wickets for 38 runs. Brightwater scored 93 in the first innings, R. Eyles, not out, 44. Upper Moutere's second innings added 109 runs (R. Eggers 62), and Brightwater madn 122 (R. C. Eden 29, Ross Eden, not out, 33). In a match between the Motueka and Waimea Defence Rifle Clubs .at Brightwater Motueka won by 32 points.
