CLAIM FOR RATES

The Wellington City Council's liability to pay rates on !and under Its jurisdiction in Eastbourne was argued in the Supreme Court to-day, when a claim was made by the Eustbourne Borough Council for the payment of rates amounting to £58. The question involved was as to whether the land was rateable, or whether it was used by the Wellington City Council for forest plantation purposes, and was, in consequence, exempt from rates. It was claimed by the defendant that trees had actually been planted on part of the land. Mr. Justice Herdman reserved his decision. Mr. E. Parry appeared for tho Eastbourne Borough Council, and Mr. J. O'Shoa (City .Solicitor) for the Wellington City Council.
