HAPPIER OUTLOOK
THE PRIVATE TRADER
LATE GOVERNMENT'S FAILURE
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post")
AUCKLAND, This, Day. Xv his presidential address to the Chamber of. Commerce, Mr. H. T.,.Mei>rit said it was not his intention to consider tho causes which brought about the Reform debacle at the election except to state that the late Government failed to gauge to-any degree of accuracy tho deep resentment felt by nearly all classes of the community, against its seeming reluctance to chock' the growing interference of the State in the private trading of the community. Apparently such resentment was not confined to the cities, but even penetrated the ranks of tho. primary producers. The recent pronouncement* by responsible members of the present Government to thoroughly investigate tho position was more than welcome.
The country^ had been waiting for many years for the repeal of the war regulations, introduced at a time when. they were admittedly necessary. Mr. Merritt said ho did not think ho was betraying a confidence when he informed his audience- that the chamber had received an assurance from, tho:Department concerned that the repeal of these regulations would bo one of ,the first questions to bo considered.
