SOCIAL TRADING

ABOLITION OPPOSED

The following resolution was passed by the Wellington Labour Representation Committee at its monthly meeting on. Wednesday:— "This meeting of the Wellington Labour Representation Committee views with grave alarm the statements" accredited in the Press to the Prime Minister. (Sir Joseph' Ward) in regard to social trading services operated by municipalities and other public bodies in the interests of the people as a M'liole, particularly in reference to public activities and enterprise in \\vs matter, of supplying necessary electrical appliances and equipment to consumers. It earnestly hopes that the Prime Minister's remarks, if correctly, reported, do not mean that the* considered policy of the. Government will be a deliberate attack, in the interests of a few exploiters, on the trading concerns owned by the peopla organised as consumers through the local bodies, or the reckless handing over..of the many thousands who utilise the electricity produced by national expenditure and enterprise to exploitation by private p.ofiteers, thus seriously increasing the already high cost of living. The Wellington Labour Representation Committee requests the National Executive of the Labour Party to take such steps as. are necessary to resist any attack on publicly owned trading enterprises which have proved of such great benefit to the peopla of New Zealand." ~ .
