A NEEDED REFORM
BANK HOLIDAY QUESTION
(By Telegraph.)
(Special to "The Evening Post.")
CHEISTCHUBCH, This Day.
The view that there are too many bank holidays, and that as a result inconvenience is caused to tho commercial' community, was expressed by a number of speakers at last night's meeting of the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce..The discussion arose as the result, of a letter from the Auckland Chamber drawing attention to the inconvenience caused to the commercial > community on Monday, 31st December, owing to the banks being closed on that day and business places open. It was suggested that longer notice should be given of the intention of the banks to close on special days-or'alternately 1 that the closing of banks should bo regulatod by statute.
Mr. A. L. ;Macfarlano stated that many firms had money which they desired to place in the banks when the, banks were closed. In the Old Country many banks had a man on duty after hours so that money could be deposited. At one bank money could be deposited by placing it in a slot, in much the same way as letters were posted. "This •'matter is becoming ono of great difficulty," said Mr. Machin. He fdded that he thought it was a reasonable request to ask the banks to synchronise their holidays with those of the commercial community. It was decided to refer tho matter to the Associated Chambers of Commerce, with a recommendation that a confereuco be held, with representatives of the banks with a view to reaching a satisfactory arrangement.
