PRESENTATION TO GOVERNOR

GENERAL

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN, This Day. » An interesting presentation was inado to the Governor-General by the Mayor, of Port Chalmers (Mr. T. Anderson)] and Mr.. J. Loudon^ who was chairman of the Otago Harbour Board when His Excellency made an official inspection of the board's works and docks a little time ago. The presentation was of .in enlarged photograph of the yacht Blanche, owned by Sir James Fergusson, father of • our present GovernorGeneral. She is pictured as lying in the Port Chalmers graving dock in December, 1873.

The Blanche, of 60 tons, was sailed from Wellington to Dunedin, the passengers being Sir James Fergussou, 1 Lady Fergusson, the present Governor-. General, and his brother, Admiral Foigusson. Sir James was. an ardent yachtsman and fisherman, and it is said that he could not resist the temptation when crossing a bank to test its fishing- capabilities. On the occasion o£ . his trip in 1873 there was isome delay in entering the Heads, so the fishing, tackle was got,out and all hands wcro soon busy, with the result tliat in a short time thq deck of the yacht was covered with barracouta, cod, and othpr fish, much to the delight of His Excellency and his brother. ,

The Governor-General, in thanking Messrs. Loudon and Anderson, said ho sincerely appreciated the gift as a re. iiiiindcr of his boyhood days, and ho felt ho could visualise almost every lino and rope of tlj,c yacht, although so many years had passed. " Tho photograph was taken.by Mr* H. C. Gore, of Dunedin.

Tho ordinary citizen is being catered for by tho tomato grower of Hawkes Bay (says an'exchange). Hitherto a, man had to buy a case of a half-case of tomatoes in order to gain the advantage of market prices, but this year some of tho linos are coming forward in quarter-cases (about 81b), which a man may place under his arm and walk homo with. Quater-cascs of tomatoes were selling in Wellington recently at from Is to 2s each. Tho choicest hothouse tomatoes from the Hutt were- sold at. 3d per lb wholesale.
