WILKINS AND EIELSON
CESSATION OF EFFORTS NEW BASE TO BE SOUGHT United Press Association—By Electric Tele- ] graph—Copyright. : (Beceived 11th January, 1 p.m.) LONDON, 10th January. Sir George Wilkins wirelesses from Deception Island: —"Our present exploration trip is' ended. ' To-morrow we will seek a place,in which to store, the machines and equipment and will' investigate the possibilities of a speedy return to civilisation. This decision was reached following another flight. We flew 250 miles over country recently traversed, seeking a more southern base, accessible by boat, where more favour-
able conditions are likely. The surface appeared to be almost solid enough to land'upon, yet we knew that if the engine failed we would hurtle through billowy masses on to jagged peaks below. On account of the restricted load we were compelled to return home. We determined to postpone further efforts until next season, when we hope to establish a base on the continent itself. We will start from thence to fly along the unexplored coast 1800 miles to the Ross Sea barrier."
