SWIMMERS CENSURED
AN ATTEMPT THAT FAILED
LIFE-SAVERS ENDANGERED
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.")
DUNEDIN, This Day
Strong comment was voiced at a meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre by the president^ (Mr. M'lndoe) with reference to the action of the two swimmers who endeavoured to swim from •St. Clair beach to the caves on .Sunday.
The two swimmers, G. Collett and J. Vallis, .left St. Clair beach with the avowed intention.of swimming to the caves. That these swimmers were foolish went without saying, but what was more important was that they ventured out so far that had they got into serious difficulties which rendered aid necessary, the lives of the members of the life-saving team (who were ready andwilling to attempt the task of rescuing; them) would also have been placed in more than ordinary danger. ,The lifesavers were carrying out work of great public benefit, and were ever on the look-out for bathers in trouble, but when people from bravado or desire for notoriety deliberately risked their own lives and by their action possibly the lives of life;savers, a protest should be made in no uncertain terms.
He moved: "That the centre censure the two swimmers." The motion was carried.
