EDUCATION IN ITALY
UNIFORM SCHOOL BOOKS THE VATICAN'S. COMMENT Australian I'rcss Association—United Serric*. I "Times" Cablet. (Received 18th December, 8 a.m.) HOME, 16th December. Signor Mussolini has planned uniform text-books for all schools in Italy. Tho Vatican organ, the "Osservatore Romano, "says that teachers were allowed a certain latitude before the Fascist Revolution, provided that.the teaching did not conflict with the State's interests in temporal matters or the Church's in spiritual matters. Tht heresies of freedom of conscience, speech, and the Press camo in with Liberalism. The Fascist regime rudely shook them, but the existing testbooks continue to teach them, and also many teachers are still infected with doctrines contrary to religious faith, Christian morals, and the security of the State! The "Osservatore" calls attention to the continued teaching of tho doctrines of freedom of'conscience and speech, and especially the antiPapal bias of certain history books. Nevertheless, the "Osservatore" fears that uniformity of books will prevent parents and children from indulging in special preferences in education. j
