DUST NUISANCE

A LOWER HUTT COMPLAINT A deputation representing ratepayers "from Ludlam crescent, Lower Hutt, waited on the Lower Hutt Borough Council last evening, to ask that the surface of Ludlam crescent be sealed us soon as possible. The members of the deputation were Messrs. Odlin, Alexander, M'Gill, Neilson, and Thomas. The basis of the complaint was that the street had in recent months become •j. through highway, and tho dust nuisance had become serious. A request was made for immediate relief by moans of a water cart. In reply, the Mayor (Mr. \V. T. Strand) said that everyone would recognise that something should be done. There had been some criticism that the Council was going ahead too quickly, but he did not think that was so, motor traffic was increasing so rapidly that the Council was really behind hand. A schedule of streets to bo sealed had been prepared, but had not yet been

before the council. The schedule provided for work which would cost £20,000. The Mayor said he had no doubt that tho council would, before it went out of office, call a public mooting of the ratepayers to ask for an endorsement of the policy. Ludlam crescent was on the list to be paved to its full length. There was little hopo of the work being done at once, n.s in that case it would have to be done out of revenue, and unfortunately tho council had several unexpected calls on its revenue funds, besides which it would certainly cause bad feeling if this street were given special treatment when there might be others wanting attention just as urgently. Tho council proposed to pave 1G miles of streets, and ho hoped the deputation would use its influence to assist in obtaining a loan to carry out the work which would bo an economic proposition, as tho say ing -in maintenance would more than cover the interest on the loan. It was decided that the engineer bo asked to report on means of alleviating the dust nuisance, the Mayor suggesting oil spraying.
