A NEW ROAD
METHOD OF PURCHASE A PETONE ..QUESTION Ai resolution passed by the Pctone Borough Council last month that the council should purchase certain land belonging to Mrs. Hurrell was the subject of a motion for rescission by Councillor V. X Jacob-, son at the meeting o£ the council last night. When the council passed this resolution .last; month it had in view the putting of a. road through tho land in question to connect Udy street with Cuba street. Councillor Jacobsou said that the question was one of policy involving tho disposal of gas debenture money to purchase the.land from Mrs. Hurrell when the couucil had no agreed policy making it necessary. Before any property was bought ( there should be a main scheme approved by the ratepayers. He did not think that .the council should make any attempt to spend the gas debenture money—its only, nest egg—on a scheme which the council had to admit would not pass a poll of ratepayers. The council was not justified in spending the gas money which belonged to the whole town for the benefit of one patricular area. Councillor J. W. Longman (Seconded the motion. He did not think tho expenditure on Mrs. Hurrell's property really necessary; there were other things which required more urgent attention. A scheme by which Udy street could be carried through to Cuba street without having to purchase any land and with only the cost of roading was outlined by the' Mayor (Mr. D. M'Kenzie). -If-a road were run from Udy street to Udy street Knst and so to Cuba street it would go through property owned by the council and so involve no extra purchase. Councillor Jacobson's motion to rescind was then put to" the meeting and lost. Councillor D. M'Carthy moved that the council acquire from the Kibblewhito lwtnle under the Public Works Act the piece of land needed to continue Udy street into Cuba street, the property to bo bought out of gas debenture money. The motion was carried. Councillor M'Carthy later moved that the question of the purchase of Hiirroll s property be left in the hands of the Mayor, the chairman of the Works Committee, and the Town Clerk to be finalised with Mrs. Hurrell. This motion also was carried. t /
