Mrs. W. Smith, Wintou, Southland, is visiting Wellington. Miss Greenwood, Christchurch, is a visitor to Wellington. Mrs. Le Crcn has left for Dunedin, where she will spend some months. Miss Marjorio Gray is paying a visit to Christchurch. Professor and Mrs. C. A. Cotton wore among the passengers arriving this morning from Sydney by the Maunganui. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Burt and Miss J. Burt returned to-day by the Maunganui from Sydney. Mrs. Mortimore, formerly of Wellington, arrived by tho Maunganui for a visit to New Zealand. Mrs. Hadfield, Paraparaumu, who has taken up her residence in Sydney, arrived in Wellington by the Maunganui for a visit to New Zealand. Lady 801 l and Miss Enid Bell arrived by' the Maunganui this morning. A contingent of Girl Guide officials met and welcomed Miss Bell. Major-General Sir George Eiehardson and Lady Richardson have arrived at Auckland, and are taking up their residence at Kohimarama temporarily. Mrs. E. Hope Lewis, the Hon. J. A. Hanan and Mrs. Hannn, and Miss C. E. Ledger (Christchurch) were among thoso returning to-day by the JSfauuganui from Sydney. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Geach arrived today by the Maunganui from Sydney. Other passengers by the same ship were the Misses M. and It. Halstead, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Trolove and Miss G. Trolove, Miss B. Van Staveren, and Miss M. Menzies. Sir Harry Lauder and his niece, Miss Lauder, who came out from England by the Tamaroa, arrived in Dunedin on Saturday, and went on with Mr. Donald Macdonald to Edendale, where the famous singer will spend a holiday. Dr. and Mrs. ,C. Gordon Kemp returned to-day by the Maunganui. Mrs. Kemp has been to England on a holiday visit, and Dr. Kemp went as far as Sydney to meet her on the return journey. Mrs. F. W. Kemp (Upper Hutt), who went Home with Mrs. Gordon Kemp, is expected back in February. The name of Mr. Stark was accidentally omitted from the list of those who sang at the recent concert given at Mt. Crawford Gaol. His Scottish songs were immensely successful, drawing a double encore. Mr. A. H. Edgar was another of those who provided a car for the party. In a report of the dedication of a now Catholic church, the "Hawcra Star" says that "the parish was founded in January, 1875, with Father Fortius in charge. ... In a few months he opened the first Catholic school, and the first teacher was Miss Guerin" (now Mrs. A. J. Whittaker, of Auckland)). Miss Guerin was a pupil, in the early seventies, at the Convent in Wellington, which was burnt down many years ago, and several of her then girl associates are living in Wellington. At her Hawcra School two of her first pupils were his Grace Archbishop O'Shea and the latter's sister, the Mother Superior of Dufferin street Convent, Wellington. Pianoforte Recital. A very successful pianoforte recital was given in tho Masonic Hall, Island Bay, by the pupils of Miss Mary Redican, A.T.C.L. There was a large attendance of parents and friends. Tho pupils taking part wore: Grace Houdricksen, Joyce Hallcy, Norma Vivian, Phyllis Breeze, Dorothy Vivian, Hazel Hunter, Joan Hind, Lydie Williams, Thelma Paton, Ethel Eamshaw, Madge M'Whinney, lan Nichol, and Dick Gcstro. ' Afterwards social items were given by Misses Isobel o'Regan and Mollio Kelly and Miss Pimley. Parties at The Terrace School. Two "end of the year" functions were recently held at The Terrace School. The first was '' Parents' Day,'' when a large number of parents and friends attended to see tho children actually at work, also to inspect specimens of drawing, sketching, sewing, and other handiwork executed during the year. Through the generosity of parents, not ouly in contributing, but also in purchasing, lady members of tho school committee and of tlio Parents' Association were able to conduct a produce stall, which realised over £7. This, when subsidised, wall cause a substantial increase to be made to the library. A farewell party was also given by the boys and girls of Standards V. and VI., to which they invited their parents, members of tho school committee, and members of the Parents' Association executive. A very enjoyable programme of songs, dances, recitations, and music was provided, the "star attraction" being the Ohio Nigger Troupe with its "Two Perfect Fools." The winners of the "Wellington Firms" competition were Mrs. Down and Mr. Holdsworth. Appropriate speeches of thanks to the heaclmaster (Mr. Clarke), Mrs. Cotterell, and Mr. Murphy (the first assistants) were also made by the head prefects, Joan Barnctt and Eric Young. Party at St. Augustine's. Tho parishioners of St. Augustine's Parish, Petone, mot recently to do honour to their vicar (Mr. Ramson) and Mrs. Ramson, tho occasion being the sixth anniversary of their coming to the parish. Mrs. Sprott, wife of the Bishop, and Archdeacon and Mrs. Johnson, attended tho party. After the singing of tho National Anthem tho evening opened with a piano solo, followed by a competition, and further musical items were given. Dancing was enjoyed by a large number of young people. Beautiful bouquets wero made and prcscuted by Mrs. M'Ghie. A most enjoyable evening wtis brought to a close about midnight. 'Jomplimontary Social. A pleasant evening was spent re■cutly at Eastbourne, when tlio members of St. Alban's choir and friends tendered Mrs. Carte (their choirmistrcss) a complimentary social. Mrs. Carte is ono of the oldest residents of Eastbourne, and has always interested herself in the welfare of the community. Tho' arrangements were in tho capable hands of Mr. and Mrs. L. Parsons, who were untiring in their efforts to make the gathering tho success it was. Tho musical programme consisted of songs by Mrs. A. M'Bain, Miss Violet M'Bain, and Mr. Gilbert; a pianoforte solo by Miss Probort, and recitations by Miss Rose Carte. Tho guest of the evening played the accompaniments and dance music. On arrival Mrs. Carte was presented by Miss Joan Exley with a beautiful bouquet of pink sweet peas and roses (made up by Mrs. F. Chitty). Later in the evening tlio Vicar, the Rev. H. B. Goertz, presented Mrs. Carte, on behalf of tho choir, with a brown silk chubby umbrella with a mother-of-pearl handle. Mrs. Carte suitably responded, and a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the singing of the National a n I hem.

Mrs. Guthrie, president of the Welfare branch of the Women's National Reserve, has received the following letter from the matron of Porirua Mental Hospital: "On behalf of the female patients of tho above hospital, I wish to acknowledge the gifts of toys, books, records, etc., from the Women's National Reserve for the Christmas trees. Wo are having three Christmas trees in tho various buildings, tho staff singing carols. I am also taking this opportunity of thanking you for the personal interest you have taken in tho patients, and [ organisation for the gift of £29 2s (part, of which is being spent on v. wireless set for tho Women's Hall, to which all are eagerly looking forward), and for the many hampers received throughout tho year from the various welfare branches."
