£2000 FOR AVELLINGTON

GOVERNMENT'S DECISION An announcement that the Government would make available £2000 as a subsidy, calculated on the basis of standard wages, for relief works in the city of Wellington was made by th» Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) in reply to a deputatioa of AVellington members of Parliament which waited upon him to-day. The deputation consisted of Messrs* B. A. Wright, P. Fraser, E. Semple, C. H. Chapman, and B. M'Keen. It was pointed out to the Prime Mm« ister that at the present : time therai were 355 registered unemployed in Wellington. Of those, 145 had dependants, and 210 were without dependants. There were 293 who were capable of undertaking heavy work, 120 of whom were with dependants. It was further pointed out to the Prime Minister that a large number of unemployed was not registered. In making known the Government's 4K?cision, Sir Joseph requested the mem. bers to convey to the Mayor, of Wellington (Mr. G. A. Troup) what it pro» posed to do, and to request that Mr. Troup should see him, in order to finalise the matter. After leaving Sir : Joseph, the Labour members of the deputation saw tha Mayor, who . stated that ho would discuss the- matter with the Prime Minister on Monday. They requested the Mayor to take into consideration tha I»ossibiilty of paying standard rates to all relief workers employed by the City. Council.
