LIGHTING-UP TIMES

. Sunday 8.20 p.m. Monday 8.21 p.m. Tuesday 8.21 p.m. Wednesday 8.22 p.m. Thursday 8.23 p.m. Triday 8.24 p.m. Saturday 8.24 p.m. The ambition of tlio cyclist to ride proudly along the Hutt road bitumen was disposed of in Court this week, when a test case resulted in a fine of 10s being imposed. The Hutt road is full enough of danger without an added burden of the kind that cyclists would constitute, and the motoring death roll is already njpro than any civilised people, however long-suffering, ought to tolerate. Long ago "Autos" drew attention to the stato of the cycle track and pointed out a proper way •to go about having it put in order. Instead of the coursfe suggested being followed an attempt was made to throw the onus on tho City and Suburban Highways Board, with the inevitable result that theiwholc proposal crashed, and nothing has been done. Since then the Hutt railway was badly washed out. and the work of repairing it has greatly added to the destruction of the track. The track —as "Autos", said long ago —is au asset to Wellington, and ought not to be allowed to go to destruction. It is the various local bodies arid people as a whole, however, that should cany the burden; there is no shadow of claim on the motorist as a class. It might, perhaps, do some good to point out 6hat there is a claim on tho Governrnont, so much of the damage being attributable to tho Railway Department. Where big slips occur and motors use the track for a period the City and Suburban Highways Board may rightly bo looked to leave the track in as good order as it finds it. The same may be said for the Railway Department.
