LOANS WITHELD
UPPER HUTT PROPOSALS The application of tho Upper Hutt Borough Council to tho Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise a loan of £65,000 for sewerage purposes has been declined by the board on tho grounds that the scheme should be deferred until the settlement becomes more extensive. TJie proposed reticulation loan has also been declined by the board, as it is of the opinion that the present water supply is sufficient for immediate requirements, and tho extending- of the, present system is inadvisable until a definite policy has been formulated by tho Wellington City Council and the. Suburban Water Supply Board. The reticulation loan includes £3500, required for a new fire station, motor fire eilgine, and equipment. A letter was received from Mr. R.. E., Hayes, chairman of tho Local. Government Loans Board,, at the mooting of tho Upper Hutt Borough Council last night, giving the board's decision. A request was made by Mr. Hayes, that preliminary plans and specifications of the proposed fire brigade station should bo supplied, with a statement showing the estimated cost of the various items. When the question was opened for discussion tho Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) said that it was evident that the board's reply was the final word in rel gard to the seweiuigo loan, but not in, regard to the reticulation, and, he ■tliougUf,--that tho council..should give tlio matter further consideration. Hs moved that a letter should bo sent to the board giving -further information. lii seconding tho motion, Councillor J. R. Jameson said that it should be, .sufficient for tho Loans Board to receive a motion from the council stating what they proposed to spend on the tire sta-, tion, and that the council should not be put to the expense of drawing, up plans when the loan might not be approved. 'He felt certain that the Loans. Board, had no idea of the water pressure at Upper Hutt. Councillor Shearman said that it should bo pointed out in the letter that a fire station would be useless without the water supply. After further discussion the Mayor's motion was carried.
