"JUMBO" WELLS DEAD

Frederick (better known as "Jumbo") Wells, the New Zealand champion professional racing cyclist, collapsed in a city tram last night, and died in hospital, at the ago of 43. He, won the mile wheel race at the Motordrome on Saturday night. Ho was an all-round athlete. As a young cyclist in New Zealand, "Jumbo" Wells quickly made good, aud was a prominent figure in big events in Marlborough and Nelson. His rise to fame as a cyclist w:as made practically certain when he annexed New Zealand championships. Going to America ho did very well there, but it-was in Australia that he made his. greatest mark. Famous in N°w Zealand, ho became oven more so in Australia, where ho was still a popular figure in the present season. Although a veteran rider, ho was still j capable of victory. At a meeting at the Motordrome two weeks ago he scored a surprise win in a mile handicap, when it was thought that lie had lost the form which had once made him famous. According to tho cablegram today, he rode to another success last Saturday. Another branch of sport in which lio excelled was sculling. Ho figured in some of the big professional contests, one of which was with P. Hannan. His last appearances in New Zealand were as a cyclist about two years ago.
