THE WATER SUPPLY
CITY ENGINEER'S STATEMENT Tho following statement was made to "Tho Post" to-day by the Oitv Engineer, Mr. G. A. Hart:— "Suggestions have been made that the water supply available in the city at last night's fire was inadequate. This is not so. The.facts are as follow:— "(1) The pressure in the wa'leriiiains from 10 o'clock last night until 10 o'clock this morning varied from 1191b per square inch to 1351b per square inch. From 10 p.m. till 12 p.m. it varied from 1101b per square inch to 1251b per square inch. "(2) There were mains till round the block in which the fire took place. In Courtenay place there was one 6-inch main and ono 12-inch main; in Blair
street one (i-juch main; in Allen street ono (i-inch main; in Wakefield street two 8-inch mains. There were seven plugs available in the sfreofs immediately abutting on the buildings. There were many others available in (he neighbourhood. "(3) lam not content merely to deny the suggestion that the 'watersupply was inadequate, but I unhesitatingly assert that the water supply was ample and adequate at all times. The water supply is one of (lie best services for lire extinguishing purposes, aud the Wellington city water supply is one of the. best in tho Dominion. In England the pressure would have been considered to be extraordinarily good."
